Adrian Frutiger, born May 24, 1928 in Unterseen, Canton of Bern, Switzerland, is a a typeface designer who influenced the direction of digital typography in the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st. He is best known for creating the 'Univers' typefaces. 'Univers' is the name of a realist sans-serif typeface. Originally conceived and released by Deberny in 1957, the type library was acquired in 1972 by Haas. Frutiger's revolutionary two-digit type-numbering system was introduced with 'Univers'. This uses the first digit to show the weight and the second digit to show the width, with odd or even numbers indicating upright or obique. This naming system has proved invaluable for very large type family, and it works well even with recent growth of 'Univers' to sixty-three variants.
